Johnson City is the access point for the Pedernales River, and that is basically the whole pitch. All three adventures here are variations on the same theme: cool Hill Country water running over layered limestone, with progressively fewer people the further you get from the main overlook. If your family’s idea of a good day is finding a shallow pool and staying in it for four hours, this is the corner of Texas for you.

Why Families Love Johnson City

Pedernales Falls State Park is the main event, and the falls themselves genuinely do not look like the rest of Texas. The river drops across enormous tilted limestone slabs stacked at angles that make the whole area look like a different planet, and kids are mesmerized watching the water carve through it. Worth knowing before you arrive: the falls area itself is for looking, not swimming. The designated swimming area is downstream, and it is good for wading and splashing when water levels cooperate. Beyond the water, there are more than 10 miles of trail through Hill Country terrain, and the bird creek trail is excellent for wildlife viewing. Entry is about $6 a day for ages 13 and up, free for kids 12 and under. Plan on three hours minimum, and best for ages 4 and up given the uneven rock.

Pedernales Falls Trammel Crossing is the same park, quieter side. A historic low-water crossing lets families wade across the river and explore rocky pools on the far bank, and the flat limestone river bottom forms natural wading pools that are perfect for kids who just want to stand in moving water. It is dramatically less crowded than the main falls overlook, and it is included with your state park admission, so there is no reason not to add it to the same visit.

Pedernales River Nature Park is the LCRA park just upstream, and it is the local pick when the state park is packed. Shallow limestone pools along the bank, picnic areas, a nature trail through riparian woodland, and disc golf and volleyball courts for variety when someone is done swimming. Around $5 per person.

A Perfect Saturday

Arrive at Pedernales Falls State Park in the morning, walk out to the falls overlook first while the light is good and the rock is not yet radiating heat, then move down to the swimming area for the middle of the day. When the main area starts filling up, head over to Trammel Crossing and let everyone spread out in the shallow pools. If the state park has hit capacity when you arrive, which happens on hot summer weekends, drive to Pedernales River Nature Park instead. Same river, same limestone, a fraction of the crowd.

Getting There

Johnson City sits about an hour west of Austin on US 290 and roughly 90 minutes north of San Antonio. It pairs naturally with a Hill Country weekend, since Fredericksburg is another 30 minutes west. Worth knowing: Texas state parks sell out day passes on busy weekends, so reserving ahead online is the safe play.

Best Time to Visit

Late spring through early fall is swimming season, and mornings are noticeably calmer than afternoons at the main falls. The catch with any Pedernales trip is water level: too little and the swimming holes are stagnant puddles, too much and the river becomes genuinely dangerous. The Pedernales is a flash-flood river, and rangers close the water areas when levels rise. Check park conditions the morning you go rather than the week before. Fall is the best all-around hiking season, with mild temperatures and thin crowds.
