Adventures in Koloa, HI

Koloa and neighboring Poipu make up Kauai’s sunny south shore - the part of the island that stays dry when the north and east sides are getting rained on. That’s the practical reason families base here. The other reason is that one of the best family beaches in the country sits a few minutes from a Jurassic Park filming location and a blowhole that moans.

Why Families Love Koloa

Poipu Beach Park has been rated the best beach in America, and unlike a lot of things with that label it earns it for families specifically. A natural sand bar splits the water into two areas: a protected keiki (children’s) pool that’s shallow and calm enough for toddlers, and a more open side for stronger swimmers. Lifeguards are on duty, there are restrooms and showers, and a grassy area with shade trees handles the picnic and nap portion of the day. Hawaiian monk seals occasionally haul out on the sand - keep your distance and let them be. It’s free, and the lot fills by mid-morning.

Spouting Horn is 15 or 20 minutes of pure payoff. Seawater forces through a lava tube and erupts up to 50 feet in the air, accompanied by a low moaning sound as air pushes through the rock - which Hawaiian legend ties to a giant lizard trapped inside. The viewing area is paved and railed, there’s a free lot, and it’s stroller-friendly. Bigger surf means bigger eruptions.

Allerton Garden is the splurge. It’s a guided tour through a valley garden of themed garden rooms, water features, and massive Moreton Bay fig trees - the same trees kids will recognize from Jurassic Park within about four seconds. Tours run roughly two hours and reservations are required, so book before your trip rather than after you land. Parking is at the visitors center with a shuttle down to the garden. The neighboring McBryde Garden offers self-guided tours across a larger area.

For families with kids 5 and up who want a real hike, the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail runs about four miles round trip along the last undeveloped stretch of Kauai’s south shore, past lithified dunes (ancient sand turned to stone), sea cliffs, tide pools, blowholes, and a sinkhole with an ancient petroglyph cave. In winter, humpbacks and monk seals are visible from the trail. It’s mostly flat but completely exposed to sun and wind, so bring far more water than you think you need. One logistical catch: the access road past the Grand Hyatt gates closes at 6pm, so don’t get stuck out there.

A South Shore Day

Early morning: The Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail while it’s cool and the light on the cliffs is good. Two to three hours.

Late morning: Poipu Beach Park - swim, snorkel, eat, recover. Flip the order if you’d rather guarantee a parking spot.

Afternoon: The Allerton Garden tour, if you booked one. Pair it with Spouting Horn, which is right down the same road.

Anytime: Spouting Horn is a 20-minute stop you can slot in wherever it fits.

Getting There

Koloa is on the south side of Kauai, a short drive from Lihue and the island’s airport, which makes it an easy first stop after landing. Everything on this list is close together - Allerton Garden and Spouting Horn are both on Lawai Road, and Maha’ulepu is at the end of a dirt road past the resorts on the other side of Poipu.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round, genuinely. The south shore is the sunniest part of Kauai, and Poipu is a reliable beach day in months when the rest of the island isn’t. Mornings are best for the coastal trail (cooler, less wind) and for beach parking. Winter adds whales along the Maha’ulepu coast, and higher surf makes Spouting Horn more dramatic.
