Adventures in Kula, HI

Kula is Maui’s upcountry - the cool, green slopes of Haleakala between roughly 3,000 and 10,000 feet, where the air smells like eucalyptus instead of sunscreen. Most families come up here for one reason (sunrise at the summit) and are surprised to find a full day’s worth of things to do on the way back down. If your kids have already had three straight beach days, this is the reset.

Why Families Love Upcountry Maui

It doesn’t feel like Hawaii, and that’s exactly the appeal. Haleakala National Park Sunrise puts you at 10,023 feet looking into a crater full of cinder cones that reads as genuinely Martian, with the sun coming up through a floor of clouds below you. It is also often below freezing at dawn, which delights kids who packed for the tropics right up until it doesn’t. Bring layers and blankets. Seriously.

Lower down, Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area is a redwood, eucalyptus, and pine forest at 6,200 feet running 20 to 30 degrees cooler than the coast - the Redwood and Plum trails feel more Pacific Northwest than Pacific island, and it’s free. Hosmer Grove Trail is the easy one: a shaded half-mile loop at 6,800 feet with interpretive signs and a good chance of spotting nene, the endangered Hawaiian goose. And Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm at 4,000 feet is the low-effort win - a self-guided walk through 45 lavender varieties with ocean and valley views, a scavenger hunt for kids, and lavender-flavored things in the shop. It’s stroller-friendly, which almost nothing else up here is.

For older kids, Sliding Sands Trail drops from the summit visitor center straight into the crater on soft volcanic sand, past silversword plants that grow nowhere else on Earth. You don’t have to do the whole thing - the first mile in and back out is plenty of otherworldly. Just remember that at 10,000 feet, the climb back out is much harder than the walk in.

Sunrise Requires a Reservation - Book Early

This is the single most important thing to know about Kula. Haleakala sunrise entry (roughly 3am to 7am) requires a reservation booked in advance at recreation.gov, and the practical advice is to book two or more months out. There’s also a per-vehicle national park entrance fee on top of the reservation. Verify current pricing before you go.

If you miss the sunrise window, don’t write off the mountain. Daytime entry doesn’t need a sunrise reservation, and Hosmer Grove, Sliding Sands, and the summit rim trails are all still there at 10am.

A Kula Day Plan

Pre-dawn: Leave the coast very early - it’s a long, switchbacked climb - and watch sunrise from the summit. Layers, blankets, hot drinks.

Morning: Walk a summit rim trail or the top mile of Sliding Sands while the light is clear, then drop to Hosmer Grove for the easy loop and some bird watching.

Afternoon: The lavender farm for a slow hour and the views, or Polipoli if everyone still has legs. Clouds and fog usually roll in upcountry by afternoon, so do the view-dependent things first.

Getting There

Kula sits up the mountain from central Maui, and everything on this list is reached by narrow, winding roads - budget more driving time than the mileage suggests, and pack motion sickness remedies if anyone in your family needs them. There’s no gas or groceries at the summit, so fill up and stock snacks before you start climbing. The last stretch of road into Polipoli needs 4WD when it’s wet.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round for the mountain, with mornings clearly better than afternoons for views at every elevation. Lavender blooms best June through August. Whatever month you go, pack like you’re headed somewhere cold, because at the summit you are.
