Adventures in Lake George, NY

Lake George sits at the southeastern corner of the Adirondack Park, and it’s the classic New York family lake vacation - 32 miles of clear water, a walkable village at the south end, and a mountain you can drive to the top of. Half the adventures we track here are campgrounds, which tells you the shape of the trip: this is a place families come for several days, not an afternoon.

Why Families Love Lake George

Million Dollar Beach is the main event for day visitors. Wide sandy shoreline, lifeguards on duty, water that stays shallow a long way out, and Adirondack peaks in every direction. Changing rooms, restrooms, and a snack bar are on site. There’s a per-vehicle parking fee and the lot fills early on hot summer weekends - if it’s a Saturday in July, be there before 10am or plan on circling.

Prospect Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway is the low-effort viewpoint. A scenic toll road climbs most of the 2,030 feet, and a short shuttle ride or 0.6-mile walk covers the rest to a summit panorama taking in Lake George, the Adirondacks, and Vermont’s Green Mountains. Kids like picking landmarks out of the view. If you’d rather earn it, the hiking trail from the base is about 3.2 miles and a genuine workout for older kids. The road is seasonal, roughly late May through October.

Camping Is the Real Move Here

Hearthstone Point Campground is the easy version: a state campground about two miles south of the village with 251 pine-shaded sites, many right on the waterfront. Kids swim at the campground beach, fish from shore, and you’re still close enough to town for a shops-and-ice-cream afternoon when it rains. Dogs are welcome. It also books up fast - reserve months ahead for summer weekends.

Lake George Islands Camping is the version your kids will remember forever. There are over 300 islands in the lake, and the state maintains campsites on many of them, reachable only by boat. Sites have fire rings and pit toilets and not much else. The Glen Island, Long Island, and Narrow Island groups are the popular ones. You’ll need your own boat or canoe to get out there, and everything you bring has to fit in it - a great constraint for teaching kids to pack light, and a hard one for families used to car camping. Best for ages 5 and up.

A Long Weekend

Day 1: Arrive, set up at Hearthstone Point, swim at the campground beach, and let everyone decompress from the drive.

Day 2: Million Dollar Beach in the morning - early, for the parking - then the village in the afternoon. Drive up Prospect Mountain before dinner for the long light.

Day 3: If you’ve got a boat and older kids, move out to an island site for a night. If not, hike the Prospect Mountain trail from the base and swim it off afterward.

Getting There and Parking

Lake George is in the southeastern Adirondacks, a short drive north of Albany and a few hours from New York City, which is exactly why it gets busy in summer. Campground parking comes with your site. For day trips, Million Dollar Beach has a large lot that still fills early, and Prospect Mountain puts you near the summit via shuttle from the upper lot. Island campers launch from public boat launches around the lake.

Best Time to Visit

Late June through Labor Day is the window - that’s when lifeguards are on duty at Million Dollar Beach, when the water is warm enough to enjoy, and when the campgrounds are open and full. Book campsites months in advance for that stretch. Late May through October still gets you Prospect Mountain, and the shoulder weeks in September bring thinner crowds and the start of foliage if swimming isn’t the point of your trip.
