Adventures in Lake Placid, NY

← All Adventures

Lake Placid is a two-time Winter Olympics village wedged into the Adirondack High Peaks, and for families it hits a sweet spot most mountain towns miss: you can walk to a swimming beach from Main Street, then be at a High Peaks trailhead ten minutes later. Everything we track here sits within about 15 minutes of the village center, which means no long drives between activities and nobody melting down in the back seat.

Why Families Love Lake Placid

The village sits on Mirror Lake, and the Lake Placid Public Beach is right there - free, sandy, with a shallow entry, a roped swim area, restrooms and changing facilities, and lifeguards on duty in summer. Swim, then walk into town for ice cream. That’s the whole pitch, and it’s a good one.

Mirror Lake also bans motorboats, which makes paddling it unusually pleasant with kids. Outfitters on Main Street rent kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards by the hour, and the lake is small enough to circle in a couple of hours. On a calm morning, Whiteface Mountain reflects off the water and you understand where the lake got its name.

For hiking, there are two very different options. Cobble Hill Trail is free, 0.6 miles, and ends on an open rock ledge with a full High Peaks skyline view - the best effort-to-payoff ratio in the area, and doable with a 3-year-old. Mount Jo is the step up: 2.6 miles round trip behind the Adirondack Loj, with two routes to the summit (a short steep scramble or a longer gradual path) so you can match the trail to your kids. The view over Heart Lake with the High Peaks rising behind it is the classic Adirondack postcard.

And Heart Lake itself is a clear mountain lake with a small sandy beach, canoe rentals, and mountains right behind the swimming area. Beach in the morning, Mount Jo in the afternoon, same parking lot - that’s a perfect Adirondack day and the itinerary we’d build first.

A Two-Day Plan

Day 1 - village day. Morning paddle on Mirror Lake while the water is glassy, lunch in town, afternoon at the public beach. If anyone still has energy before dinner, Cobble Hill takes about an hour round trip.

Day 2 - mountain day. Drive out to the Adirondack Loj early. Swim and paddle at Heart Lake in the morning, then hike Mount Jo in the afternoon once the summit has cleared.

Getting There and Parking

Lake Placid is deep in the Adirondack Park in northern New York - a long drive from just about anywhere, and worth it. Once you’re there, the village is walkable and street and municipal lots cover the in-town stops. The one to plan around is the Adirondack Loj: it charges a per-vehicle fee and the lot fills early on summer weekends, so both Heart Lake and Mount Jo reward an early start. Cobble Hill has a small pull-off on Averyville Road that holds a handful of cars.

Best Time to Visit

May through October covers the hiking; roughly late June through August is the swimming window, since Adirondack lake water is honest about being cold. September and early October are arguably the best of it - the bugs are gone, the trails are quiet, and Cobble Hill in peak foliage is spectacular for a hike that short. Bring layers whenever you come. Summit weather does its own thing regardless of what the village is doing.
