Adventures in Pilot Point, TX
Pilot Point is the gateway to Ray Roberts Lake State Park, one of the premier family outdoor destinations in North Texas. Sitting on the shores of a 29,000-acre lake about an hour north of Dallas, this area offers swimming, fishing, biking, and camping that rival parks twice the drive away.
What to Do
Ray Roberts Lake State Park - Isle du Bois Unit is the family favorite. The sandy swim beach has a gentle slope perfect for toddlers and young kids, and lifeguards are on duty during summer weekends. The dedicated kids fishing pond is stocked and designed for small anglers - kids under 17 don’t need a Texas fishing license. Campsites range from tent-only to full RV hookups, with lakeside sites being the most popular.
Ray Roberts Lake State Park - Johnson Park Unit on the east side of the lake has a more secluded feel, with camping, fishing piers, and miles of equestrian and hiking trails through post oak forest. It’s a great alternative when Isle du Bois fills up.
The Greenbelt Corridor connects the two units with a 10+ mile paved trail following the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. It’s flat and shaded - perfect for family bike rides. You can ride the entire corridor as a day trip or break it into shorter sections.
Day Trip Plan
Start at Isle du Bois in the morning - let the kids fish at the pond while it’s cool, then hit the swim beach by late morning. Pack a lunch and eat at the shaded picnic pavilions. Afternoon: bike the Greenbelt trail as far as your family can handle, or explore the Lost Pines Trail (3.5 miles, scenic).
Getting There
Pilot Point is about 60 miles north of Dallas via US 380. The drive takes about an hour. The town has basic services - gas stations and a few restaurants - but bring groceries if you’re camping.
Best Time to Visit
Late spring through early fall for swimming (the beach is best May-September). Fall is ideal for camping and biking on the Greenbelt. The park is open year-round but the swim beach closes in winter.
Good to Know
$7/day per adult, kids 12 and under free. Camping $15-$26/night. The swim beach parking lot fills by late morning on summer weekends - arrive before 10 AM. The Texas State Parks Pass ($70/year) covers entrance fees.
