Adventures in Tatum, TX

Tatum is a small East Texas town that happens to be home to one of the most unique state parks in the system - Martin Creek Lake State Park. The warm-water lake and island campsites make this an unforgettable family destination.

What to Do

Martin Creek Lake State Park is the draw. The lake receives warm-water discharge from a nearby power plant, keeping water temperatures mild year-round and creating exceptional fishing conditions. Largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and channel catfish are reliably active even in winter when other Texas lakes go quiet - making this one of the best year-round family fishing destinations in the state.

The park’s island campsites are what make Martin Creek Lake truly special. Several sites sit on a small island connected to the mainland by a footbridge - kids think it’s the coolest thing ever to camp on an island surrounded by water. The sites have water and electric hookups, and waking up to mist rising off the lake is magical.

Beyond fishing and camping, the park has about 3 miles of easy trails through dense East Texas pine forest, and the calm lake is excellent for family kayaking and canoeing.

Day Trip Plan

Start with fishing from the pier or shoreline in the morning when fish are most active. Bring a canoe or kayak and paddle out to explore the quiet coves in the afternoon. If you’re staying overnight, the island campsites are a must - reserve as early as possible.

Getting There

Tatum is about 2.5 hours east of Dallas via I-20 and US 43. The town is small - bring groceries and supplies with you. The park is well-signed from the highway.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round for fishing (warm-water discharge keeps fish active in every season). Spring and fall are most comfortable for camping and hiking. Summer is hot and humid but the lake keeps you cool. Winter fishing here is some of the best in East Texas.

$4/day adults, kids 12 and under free. Camping $12-$20/night. The park rarely fills up - it’s one of the least crowded state parks in Texas, which means more space and more fish for your family. Boat trailer parking is available at the ramp.
